A photographic record of the street outside the Bank of England, filled end to end, with a rainbow across it.

The street outside the Bank of England, packed from the steps to the far corner, on the day the world came to ask the banks a question. A rainbow happened to cross the frame while the shutter was open.

The demand written on the placards was not complicated: change that people can see is fair. Not a slogan about markets, not a theory of value, simply the request that the arrangement be visible and that it apply to everyone.

Photographs like this one matter later rather than at the time. Crowds get described afterwards by people who were not standing in them, and the descriptions tend to shrink. A photograph is harder to argue with.
